Adoption Order Translation, The Things Parents Ask First

Papers about a child raise questions no other document does. These are the ones parents put to us first, and there are more answers about how we work if you need them.

The court abroad says it must be a sworn translator. Is that different?

It is. Spain, Portugal, Italy and a few others appoint translators through their own courts, and a British certified copy will not satisfy them. Britain has no such system, so a sworn version is only needed when the papers are going back out. Name the country and we point you to the right one before you pay.

Do guardianship and adoption orders mean the same thing here?

No, and mixing them up causes real trouble. An adoption order makes a child yours for good. A guardianship order may only say who looks after them for now. We keep whichever word the court used and explain it underneath, so no UK office reads more into it than the judge wrote.

Ours was arranged under kafala. Can you still translate it?

Yes, and these come through often. Kafala gives care of a child without ending the birth link, which is not the same as adoption in UK law. We say on the page exactly what the court granted, so the office reading it knows what it is looking at.

The order gave my child a new name. Does the old one go in too?

Both names go on, in the places the court put them. The order is usually the only paper linking the two, and that link is the whole reason a passport office or a school asks to see it. Hiding either name would make your copy far less useful.

The birth parents are named. Can that part be left out?

No. A translation has to match the page it came from, and a missing name is exactly the kind of gap that raises questions. If the file is sensitive, tell us and we will keep the number of people who see it down to two.

Do you translate a travel consent letter as well?

Yes, and these arrive most often days before a holiday. Airline staff and border officers ask for one when a child flies with one parent or a relative. They are short, so they cost little, and it is far better to have it in the bag than to hope.

Does the court's reasoning need doing, or just the order itself?

It depends who is reading. A passport office normally wants the order and the page saying it is final. A judge or a solicitor here will want the reasons behind it too. Send the whole file and you get a price both ways before you decide.

Can the new birth record be done at the same time?

Yes, and it works out cheaper together. Many countries issue a fresh birth record once an adoption goes through, and UK offices often want to see the two side by side. Doing them in one order also keeps the names worded the same across both.
