Spanish Translation Questions We Are Asked Every Week

These come from people with their own Spanish papers open in front of them. Not the basics, but the details that decide whether an office accepts the file.

Should I ask my registro for the literal or the extract?

The literal, almost always. The short extract leaves your parents off and skips the notes in the margin, and those are exactly what a caseworker reads on a family application. The literal costs you nothing more to request. Ask for that one and you will not be sent back for it later.

There is writing down the side of my certificate.

It goes in, word for word. Spanish registries record a divorce, a name change or a death as an anotación marginal rather than issuing a new paper. Those few lines are often the most important thing on the page, and a translation that skips them looks incomplete.

I have two surnames. Do both stay on the English copy?

Both, in the same order your papers use. British forms expect one surname, so people are tempted to drop the second. Do not. Every Spanish record you own carries both, and a missing one makes two documents look like two different people.

What happens to the ñ and the accents in my name?

They stay, unless your passport writes it differently, in which case we follow the passport and add a short note. A name typed as Munoz when the record says Muñoz is enough to spark a query, and the note stops that before it starts.

My certificate is electronic, with a long reference code.

That is fine, and common now. Spain, Peru and others issue signed electronic records with a code the office can check online. We carry the code and the signature block straight across, so nobody has to take your word for it.

My papers are from Mexico, not Spain. Same thing?

The language is shared, the paperwork is not. Mexican, Colombian, Peruvian and Argentinian records use their own wording and layouts, and an older Latin American entry can be handwritten. Your file goes to someone who reads records from that country, not just the language.

Does the apostille page need doing as well?

Sometimes. Many apostilles are already printed in more than one language, so the office can read them as they are. Send it with the certificate and we will tell you which case you are in before charging for it.

My papers are going back to Spain, not to a UK office.

Then Spain wants a traductor jurado, a translator sworn before its own authorities, and a British certified copy may not be enough. Say where it is going before you order and we will point you at the right route the first time.
