Questions Families Ask Before Ordering A Death Translation

These are the things families ask once the certificate is in front of them. Every one of them has held somebody up at least once.

The death happened abroad. Do I have to register it here too?

You do not have to, but many families choose to. A death abroad is recorded by that country, and the UK will act on that record once it is in English. Some people also ask a consulate here to note it, which makes later paperwork easier. Either way, the English copy is the part every UK office needs first.

Ours does not give a cause of death. Will that be a problem?

Not for us. Plenty of countries leave that line off the main certificate and put it on a separate medical sheet instead. We write out what your page holds and never add a line that was not there. If the office asking has said they want the cause, tell us and we will say what you need to request from the registry.

Do you keep the medical wording exactly as the doctor put it?

Word for word, yes. That line is often the first thing an insurer, a coroner or a pension provider looks at, so changing it would change what the paper says. Where a term has no English match, the original stays on the page with a short note beside it.

Can the heirs statement be translated at the same time?

Yes, and it usually saves money. France, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands issue a separate paper naming who inherits, and a solicitor here nearly always asks for both. Sent together they are quoted as one job rather than two.

We only have a hospital letter so far, not the certificate.

Send it over. A hospital or coroner letter is often enough to get a claim or a visa file moving while the registry prepares the full certificate. When the certificate arrives, we do that too, and the second job costs a fraction of the first.

The date of death is written in another calendar.

Both dates go on the page, side by side. Hijri and Persian dates appear on records from much of the Middle East, and nobody reading your file should have to work out the year. The original date is never replaced, only explained.

That is common, and it is not a problem. Late registration happens after a war, after a move, or simply because nobody asked for a copy at the time. We show both dates clearly, the death and the issue, so no reader thinks one of them is a mistake.
